Free-stroke (tirando), is a technique in which the finger hits nothing after plucking the string.
Free-stroke sounds "light" and makes it possible to play fast passages more easily, though some guitarists (esp. with long nails) use the free-stroke exclusively and are able to produce a strong sound with it.
